A 4 DAYS TRAINING WORKSHOP ON BIG DATA ANALYTICS AND DATA VISUALIZATION WITH JMP-SAS SOFTWARE
West Africa Young Statisticians
Association (WAYSA) and Statistical Modelling Group (SMG) Department of
Statistics, University of Ibadan Introduces a 4 days training workshop
on Big Data Analysis and Data Visualization with JMP-SAS software (Free
JMP-SAS License with installation instructions for all attendees) for
students, industries, cooperate bodies, government agencies and
researchers
VENUE: UI INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE, IBADAN
DATE: 04 - 07 DECEMBER, 2018 TIME: 9:00am - 4:00pm
INTRODUCTION
JMP
is a suite of computer programs for statistical analysis developed by
the JMP business unit of SAS institutes created JMP in 1989 to empower
scientists and engineers to explore data visually. Since then, JMP has
grown from a single product into a family of statistical discovery
tools, each one tailored to meet specific needs.JMP is used in
applications such as Six Sigma, quality control, and engineering, the
design of experiments, as well as for research in science, engineering,
and social sciences. The software is focused on exploratory visual
analytics, where users investigate and explore data. These explorations
can also be verified by hypothesis testing, data mining, or other
analytic methods. In addition, discoveries made through graphical
exploration can lead to a designed experiment that can be both designed
and analyzed with JMP.
Also, an essential
element of any research is statistical analysis and documentation of
research findings. This is not limited to the science-based disciplines
but peculiar to disciplines in the Social Sciences, Technology,
Education, Medicine and even the Arts. The relative advantage of
computer speed, accuracy and capacity to handle the large volume of data
in a few seconds have necessitated the use of specialized software for
some common and complex data structures.
An
intensive training workshop on the use of JMP-SAS software for the
analysis of high-frequency data. Participants will be exposed to the
practical application of JMP by experienced and competent professional
statisticians and specialists in academia and industry.
OBJECTIVE OF THE TRAINING
I.
Teach computation of basic statistical information (data summaries,
estimates, tests, confidence intervals, regression etc) Using JMP- SAS
software.
II. To develop capacity on the use and applications of JMP-SAS software.
III. To expose participants to the theory, meaning and interpretation of some relevant statistical concepts
IV. To promote, inform researchers about JMP-SAS software and it important in modern day research work.
STATISTICAL PACKAGE TO BE OFFERED
The statistical software to be used for the training is JMP- SAS. Everyone who registers for the workshop and joins WAYSA on www.waysas.org will be given JMP- SAS license with guidelines to install free of charge.
TRAINING FORMAT
The
training will utilize a participatory approach for 4 days. It will
include lectures, interactive teaching/learning methods. More hours will
be devoted to a practise session.
RELATED INPUTS AND OUTPUTS
i. Well-designed users-friendly trained manuals
ii. The training friendly delivery strategy that encourages learning by doing hand on approach
iii. Self- appraisal and simple exercise to test the extent to which each trainee is benefiting from the learning process.
EXPECTED RESULT
At the end of the training participants should be able to:
i. Implement common statistical procedures to analyze their own data sets.
ii. Conduct practical classes using the JMP-SAS software.
iii. Analyze primary data from the questionnaire.
iv. Know the appropriate approach to apply to different data structure
v. Relate with JMP-SAS more better than R, SPSS, STATA, PYTHON etc
TARGET PARTICIPANTS
i.
Colleges, Polytechnic and University teachers of statistics (including
teachers in colleges of education, medical colleges etc)
ii.
Users of statistics in Natural Sciences, Social sciences, Business
management Students (undergraduates and postgraduates) in the sciences
and related fields.
iii. Directors, managers and policy makers
in Federal and States Miniseries, as well as Department of Planning and
Research in the local governments.
iv. Interested members of the general public.
DURATION AND TRAINING MODALITIES
The
period of training shall be between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.
While we encourage participants to come with their laptops. We will
ensure that each participant has a computer unit to him/her for
effective teaching and learning. The challenge of erratic power supply
will be adequately taken care of.
RESOURCE PERSONS
Resource
persons are an experienced and highly skilled researcher from SAS,
Universities and Research Institutes both in Nigeria and abroad.
They include;
1. Prof. Richard De Veaux, Professor of Statistics at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, USA http://sites.williams.edu/rdeveaux/
2. Mr Sam Korie, Biometric Unit, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan
3. Dr Taofik Dawud, Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Ibadan
The
